Book 5

Book 5: Outer cover approx  4.5 x 5, inside pages approx.. 3 x 4, 26 pages, copper buttons, Japanese stab stitch binding with waxed linen.

Book 5 is like a warm blanket given to you while you watch a fire on a chilled October evening. With it’s grey felt cover and copper buttons it has style and yet open it up and you will find depth as well. The envelopes are perfect for gathering small objects or scraps of paper that might weave themselves into a loving proposal of some sort. Book 5 is right for you if you anticipate feeling chilled this winter and want to prepare with some words that spark. There may already be some words in those envelopes….

Book 5 is the last in the first week of this project and the last to receive it’s profile alone. For the remainder of the project I will be posting books on a weekly basis.

Book 4

Book 4
Beautiful Book 4 has been chosen and is quite happy about it.

Book Four: 80 pages, approx.. 4L x 3H, hand stitched with wax linen, found shell, wrapped with cotton

Paper: blank 50lb, vintage paper from “The World of Birds”, color copies of artist’s original artwork, graph paper and other random fancy papers

Book Four was created October 4th and patiently awaited it’s photo shoot. Which just happened this morning, but Book Four has no complaints, with it’s map cover and vintage world imagery, it simply wants to know where you are going. I think Book Four would be a loyal companion on any trip, long or short. Honestly, in real life, it fell over as I wrote that, partly exhausted from staying up all night awaiting the photo shoot and partly overwhelmed with excitement to meet you.

Book 3

Book Three: 50 pages, approx. 4.5 x 5.5, pamphlet stitch with waxed linen, postcard cover

Papers: blank 50lb, vintage computer, original fiber art, & color copies (fragile) of artists original artwork

This book was very difficult to work with, problematic, complicated to bind and a mess to attach……..like my non-existent teenage daughter- a moody, darker, more goth version of myself. The simple pamphlet stitch irreverently and defiantly claims to hold it all together, with quiet disagreement I added some medical tape to support the spine. As the daylight shortens and the darkness comes closer sooner, this is the perfect book to draw, sketch and articulate your complaints. So sneak away have some tea- no I mean whiskey- and sincerely, my apologies in advance for any late night prom drama this book might bring you. At the last moment I attached a bell, for whose safety I do not know.

However ridiculously insulted this book may be,  it is a $25 book.

Book 2
Book 2 is no longer available and is on it's way to Cambridge, MA, ready to explore -

 

 

Book 2 is approx. 3.5 W , 4.5 H, with 80 pages of various textures including felt and fabric, 4 tiny pockets, and is hand sewn with waxed linen. The cover is created with found birch bark. A red thread wraps around the book and a small coconut bead secures the bundle. This book could easily be found in the hands of a Momma fox, perhaps it's kept in the den for comfort and safe keeping. This one's not for too much traveling. Best for recording thoughts when returning from the woods.

Book 1

Book 1: 4.5 H, 3 L, 60 pages, PVA glue, scotch tape, hand sewn with wax linen, wax linen wrap with attached shell.
Paper: Vintage paper salvaged from the book "The World of Birds", graph paper, 50lb blank paper, vellum, vintage pay roll paper, traditional school lined paper, handmade decorated paper made with placing food dye in bubbles and blowing bubbles over paper.

This book was a joy to create, bundling the signatures and hand sewing was both enjoyable and meditative. This is could be an everyday book, for traveling, or kept for documenting special events and moments or simply for poetry or for poetry that isn't so simple.

Beginning the project

 

Welcome to 365 Handmade Books: A Book A Day. This blog will document my process as I create a handmade book each day from October 1, 2013 to October 1, 2014.  I completed my doctorate in art therapy May 2013, and now want to balance my academic work with my more sensual, kinesthetic and meaningful visual art. I look forward to photographing each book each day and including a description of the materials and my process. Each book will have a life of it's own, a story to tell. My intention is to create interactive books that will include blank pages along with pages for inspiration and interest. These books may be considered art journals, sketchbooks, or visual diaries. I have been collecting materials for over 10 years (a few sample photos above), such as a wide variety of paper, recycled objects, fabric and fiber. These materials will be chosen with care and with spontaneity. I  hope these books will be appealing to the senses, objects to be held, flipped through, drawn in, written in and displayed. Each book will be numbered, signed and weighed. This blog also serves as a forum for my gofundme project in which funders  may choose from the books they see here. The first book is coming today- stay tuned!
